Rescattering Effects in 19 GeV/c PD Interactions and Search for a ΔΔ Component in the Deuteron

Data on pd interactions at 19 GeV/c are used to study spectator proton distributions. A large excess of protons in the momentum range > 200 MeV/c is seen, compared to what the spectator model predicts on the basis of the deuteron wave function. We find that this excess approximately can be described by initial and final state rescattering processes. The mass distributions of the spectator-pion systems show a low mass enhancement. This enhancement is interpreted as partly due to kinematics but also due to the rescattering effects. From the prediction of our model an upper limit for the ΔΔ component in the deuteron is 0.1 ± 0.2%.

We have studied He-p collisions at a He incident momentum of 8.56 GeV/c using the 1 m Dubna bubble chamber. The p -'He elastic scattering, the coherent p + 'He~X + 'He + m production and the breakup reaction p + He -+p+'He+ n have beeninvestigated. Cross sections and production features are presented.From the breakup reaction, subsamples of events in which a He or a n appear as spectators were selected.

The reaction p + d → p + d + X was studied at 0.8-2.0 GeV proton beam energies with the ANKE magnetic spectrometer at the COSY synchrotron storage ring. The proton-deuteron pairs emerging with high momenta, 0.6-1.8 GeV/c, were detected at small angles with respect to the proton beam. Distribution over the reaction missing mass Mx reveals a local enhancement near the threshold of the pion pair production specific for the so-called ABC effect. The enhancement has a structure of a narrow bump placed above a smooth continuum. The invariant mass of the dππ system in this enhancement region exhibits a resonance-like peak at M dππ ≈ 2.36 GeV/c 2 with the width Γ ≈ 0.10 GeV/c 2 . A possible interpretation of these features is discussed.
