“…In addition to its taxonomic characteristics and distribution in different ecosystems, it is important to understand the development peculiarities and ecological adaptations of this species. Kotov et al (2013) considered that neoteny is a significant characteristic of chydorid evolution, where the developmental time is altered relative to other cladocerans and sexual maturity is also reached relatively faster. The small size and low number of juvenile instars, as well as the initiation of reproduction at an early age may comprise a strategy to minimize the impacts of predation and shortage of food availability according to Lynch (1980a), whereas sexual reproduction and the production of resting eggs may be considered preparation to tolerate extreme conditions (Fryer, 1996a).…”
