Study of the estrogenic-like mechanism of glycosides of cistanche using metabolomics

Abstract: Cistanche deserticola, known as Rou Cong-Rong in China, has been used as a tonic for more than 1800 years, with previous studies demonstrating that glycosides of cistanche (GCs) are a main active component.

“…Abnormal changes, such as fumarate, malate and α-ketoglutaric acid, belonging to the citric acid cycle, confirm this view. The citric acid cycle, as the linkage among sugar, lipids and amino acid metabolism, is the most important energy source for the body [25]. In addition, other amino acids are substrates for metabolic energy, which could be used for the synthesis of specific proteins, peptides and other nitrogenous compounds [26].…”

“…To elucidate the mechanism of F-G in the treatment of liver injury, three groups of serum samples, including that from the normal control group, model control group, and F-G group (30 g/kg), were used for metabolic analysis by UPLC-MS according to a method published by the authors with minor modifications[ 35 ].…”

“…Its stem, also known as Rou Cong Rong (Wang et al, 2012), is a precious traditional Chinese medicine and is usually used as a tonic (Ai et al, 2021;. It can nourish the kidneys, relax the bowels, and protect the liver, exerting anti-oxidant, anti-aging, anti-fatigue, immunoregulation, and estrogen-like effects (Li et al, 2020;Piwowarczyk et al, 2020;Song et al, 2017). It mainly consists of phenylethanol glycosides, iridoids, lignanoids, alkaloids, and polysaccharides (Fu et al, 2020;Tu et al, 2007).…”
