Study of the formation of amorphous carbon and rGO-like phases from palmyra sugar by variation of calcination temperature

Abstract: We have processed biomass from palmyra sugar to produce allotrope carbon by heating process with the variation of calcination temperature. The formation of amorphous carbon (a-C) was confirmed from the XRD result heated at 400 • C with the observation of the peak at the position of 24 • . By increasing the temperature at 700 • C, the presence of two peaks at 24 • and 43 • were observed, indicating the formation of rGO-like phase. The functional groups detected by FTIR spectra consist of C=C, C-O, C=O, C-H and … Show more

“…The broadening in the peaks of the XRD diffractograms is an indication of the amorphous nature of the activated carbon. The position of the peak for ACOC (before and after adsorption) is observed at about 24°, and the result is identical to that obtained in previous studies [ 14 ]. An increase in the intensity of XRD peaks is observed after the adsorption of both dyes.…”

“…The XRD data are obtained by using CuKα radiation with(λ = 0.15406 Å , showing the broad peak for both samples, indicates that the phase is amorphous [9]. The differences in the range of 2𝜃 value from both raw materials is not that necessary, since the broad peak from the biomass materials is commonly observed around 15-45 o [9], [10], but we are using up to 60 o in order to check if maybe the material is showing another peak due to the impurity compounds that remain after the carbonization process. According to the coconut shell charcoal diffaction patterns, it shows two broad peaks located at 2𝜃~ 24 and 43 o , respectively, and those peaks are identic with the graphene peak; therefore, we can say this material as graphene-like carbon (GC) [11].…”
