Study of the Intense Meteorological Event Occurred in September 2022 over the Marche Region with WRF Model: Impact of Lightning Data Assimilation on Rainfall and Lightning Prediction

Rosa Claudia Torcasio,
Mario Papa,
Fabio Del Frate
et al.

Abstract: A destructive V-shaped thunderstorm occurred over the Marche Region, in Central Italy, on 15 September 2022. Twelve people died during the event, and damage to properties was extensive because the small Misa River flooded the area. The synoptic-scale conditions that caused this disastrous event are analysed and go back to the presence of tropical cyclone Danielle in the eastern Atlantic. The performance of the weather research and forecasting (WRF) model using lightning data assimilation (LDA) is studied in th… Show more

“…The summer is marked by sporadic but heavy rainfall events that frequently exceed 10 mm/15 min, while the wet periods are characterized by more continuous rainfall events persisting for several hours to days. The most intense rainfall event can be depicted on 15 September 2022 (12 mm/15 min), recognized also by other authors to be one of the most intense precipitation events affecting the northern Marche Region during the last century [59][60][61].…”

“…The 3DVar tool employed in this paper was developed at CNR-ISAC and was first used in combination with the RAMS@ISAC model [33] and then adapted to be used coupled with the WRF model. This 3DVar system has the capability to assimilate different kinds of observations: lightning data [34,35], radar reflectivity from ground-based radar [7,34] and from satellites [36], zenith total delay [37], and satellite-derived rain rate data [38].…”
