Study of theKL0π0π0νν¯decay

Abstract: The rare decay K 0 L → π 0 π 0 νν was studied with the E391a detector at the KEK 12-GeV proton synchrotron. Based on 9.4 × 10 9 K 0 L decays, an upper limit of 8.1 × 10 −7 was obtained for the branching fraction at 90% confidence level. We also set a limit on the K 0 L → π 0 π 0 X (X → invisible particles) process; the limit on the branching fraction varied from 7.0×10 −7 to 4.0×10 −5 for the mass of X ranging from 50 MeV/c 2 to 200 MeV/c 2 .

“…As regards the four-body kaon decays, the SM expectations are B(K − → π 0 π − νν) sm ∼ 10 −14 and B(K L → π 0 π 0 νν) sm ∼ 10 −13 [13,35,36]. These are way below the existing empirical bounds B(K − → π 0 π − νν) exp < 4.3 × 10 −5 [37] 7 and B(K L → π 0 π 0 νν) exp < 8.1 × 10 −7 [38], both at 90% CL. We may then impose…”

“…The E391a experiment has improved the limit from previous experiments (5.9 × 10 −7 [54] using π 0 → e + e − γ) 4 by a factor of 23. E391a also obtained an upper limit of 8.1 × 10 −7 [56] for the branching ratio of the K 0 L → π 0 π 0 νν decay, which is a CP conserving process and is sensitive to Reλ t (Fig. 4 right).…”

“…The limits are presented in [59]. Limits on the three-body decays K − → π − π 0 S 0 and K 0 L → π 0 π 0 S 0 were obtained in the ISTRA+ results [193] and in the E391a results [56], respectively, as searches for light pseudoscalar sgoldstino-particles S 0 [194]. The discovery potential of the rare FCNC kaon decays with missing energy in the final state is discussed recently in [195].…”

“…Since they also enterc V;A νν 0 but with the opposite relative sign, and since all of these couplings participate in the hyperon rates in Eqs. (9) and (10), one way to amplify the hyperon rates and satisfy Eq. 20simultaneously is if C V;A νν 0 ¼ 0, which implies…”

“…[6,7], the impact of NP could still be large through operators having exclusively parity-odd ds quark bilinears. The reason is that these operators do not participate directly in K → πE, hence not restricted by their data, and are instead subject to restraints from the channels with no or two pions, namely K → E and K → ππ 0 E, which at the moment have comparatively loose empirical bounds [5,[8][9][10]. Future efforts to improve upon the data on the latter two sets of channels would then be highly desirable.…”
