Elastic πN scattering and the world data of the family of reactions π − p → ηn, K 0 Λ, K 0 Σ 0 , K + Σ − , and π + p → K + Σ + are described simultaneously in an analytic, unitary, coupled-channel approach. SU(3) flavor symmetry is used to relate both the t-and the u-channel exchanges that drive the meson-baryon interaction in the different channels. Angular distributions, polarizations, and spin-rotation parameters are compared with available experimental data. Partial-wave amplitudes are determined and the resonance content is extracted from the analytic continuation, including resonance positions and branching ratios, and possible sources of uncertainties are discussed. The results provide the final-state interactions for the ongoing analysis of photo-and electroproduction data.

The new block of high precision data from EPECUR Collaboration is presented. The data has better than 1 MeV resolution in the invariant mass and show some interesting structure for negative pions. The multichannel K-matrix analysis allows explain this structure by two narrow (~20 MeV) resonances with masses 1686 and 1710 MeV. The influence of these resonances on the other channels is discussed also.

The analysis of high-precision π ± p → π ± p cross section data from the EPECUR Collaboration based on the multichannel K-matrix approach is presented. The sharp structures seen in these data are studied in terms of both opening thresholds and new resonance contributions. Some prominent features are found to be due to the opening KΣ channel. However, a complete description of the data is improved with the addition of two narrow resonant structures at W ∼ 1.686 and W ∼ 1.720 GeV. These structures are interpreted as manifestations of S11 and P11 resonances. The underlying nature of the observed phenomena is discussed.
