Study of the scavenging behavior and structural changes accompanying the interaction of aqueous Pb2+ and Sr2+ ions with calcite

Abstract: The uptake of Pb 2+ and Sr 2+ ions from aqueous solutions by calcite was studied at various initial concentrations and pH conditions using the batch method under ambient conditions. XRPD, SEM/EDS, AAS/AES, and DRIFT techniques were used in characterizing the sorption process. The results indicated that the retention mechanism of Pb 2+ and Sr 2+ ions ranged from ion incorporation to precipitate overgrowth (cerussite, hydrocerussite for Pb, strontianite for Sr) depending on the concentration and pH conditions.… Show more

“…Because Pb can form solid solutions with calcite , and apatite , minerals, PHREEQC simulations included the potential formation of nonideal, Pb-bearing solid solutions of calcite (Ca x Pb 1– x CO 3 ) and ideal solid solutions of apatite [Ca x Pb 5‑x (PO 4 ) 3 (OH; Cl; F)] . Pb may coprecipitate , with the calcium mineral or initially sorb on one of these minerals, possibly as an amorphous, precursor phase, and then become incorporated in the structure of the mineral. ,,, …”

“…43 Pb may coprecipitate 44,45 with the calcium mineral or initially sorb on one of these minerals, possibly as an amorphous, precursor phase, and then become incorporated in the structure of the mineral. 46,47,42,48 The regular solid solution used for carbonate solid-solution simulations has a miscibility gap between mole fraction 0.08 and 0.92 Pb (Figure S1). This gap means that if the mole fraction of Pb in the solid solution is less than 0.08 or greater than 0.92, only one phase formseither a Ca-dominated carbonate with less than 0.08 mole fraction Pb or a Pb-dominated carbonate with less than 0.08 mole fraction Ca.…”

“…Hydrocerussite crystals, shaped like hexagonal platelets, recline better under brush strokes than the elongated rhombohedra cerussite crystals, forming a reflective layer of similarly oriented platelets. This results in a higher covering power of the pigment and, consequently, in a (slightly) higher opacity of hydrocerussite-rich paint ( 26 , 27 ). The combination of these two effects may have motivated Vermeer to use a cerussite-rich paint to accentuate the contrast between the darker, cerussite-rich zones and the brighter, hydrocerussite-rich areas of the painting.…”

“…11), the bands of strontium carbonate are the most expressive features of infrared spectrum in the investigated temperature range. The infrared spectrum of SrCO 3 was described in detail in works [19,[54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61]. The bands at the wavelengths of 1462, 1071, 858 and 703 cm -1 are related to the double degenerated antisymmetric stretching mode (m 3 ), fully symmetric stretching mode (m 1 ), band of out-of-plane bending (m 2 ) and degenerated antisymmetric bending (m 4 ), respectively.…”
