“…For examples, lithium-containing mesoporous bioglass was found to enhance osteochondral regeneration by stimulating bone MSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation and by protecting chondrocytes and cartilage tissue in OA 35 . However, no biomaterial has yet been reported to completely retain the characteristics of native cartilage and subchondral bone tissue such as the tidemark, a histologically distinct basophilic boundary between non-calcified and calcified cartilage, which is a marker for cartilage maturation and regeneration 35,36 . Therefore, a decellularized osteochondral ECM scaffold that can maintain osteochondral hierarchy was generated to promote osteochondral regeneration.…”

“…At the calcification front of the CZC, the tidemark has been found to be metabolically active in primary OA [ 23 ]. In the mandibular condyle, though it is fibrocartilage, tidemark appears wavy in load-bearing areas and relatively flat and smooth in non-load bearing areas [ 24 ], indicating the shape of tidemark is regulated to some extent by mechanical loading of the joint. Since biomechanical instability dominates PTOA pathology, the CZC pathology could be significant to the development of PTOA.…”

“…The tidemark, the basophilic line on articular cartilage sections separating uncalcified cartilage from calcified one, which was one of the representative markers for cartilage maturation [43], was clearly detectable in the repaired cartilage section at 52 weeks. Calcified cartilage below the tidemark forms an interface between the uncalcified cartilage and subchondral bone expresses collagen type X [44].…”
