Study on elastic system fibers (ESFs) in the temporomandibular joint of the mouse.

Abstract: Abstract:Elastic system fibers (ESFs) of the mandibular condyle were studied by histochemical methods, light and electron microscopy and quantitative techniques . Three different types of fibers were observed : oxytalan, elaunin and elastic fibers. The fine oxytalan fibers appeared at 16 days insemination age and completed their distribution at 18 days insemination age, then the elaunin fibers appeared. However, the elastic fibers were not observed until 1 day after birth. The fibers formed a fibrillar network… Show more

“…Furthermore, elastase digestion followed by RF was used to differentiate elaunin fibers from elastic and oxytalan fibers. Moreover, the distribution of oxytalan fibers was estimated by comparing the results of PRF and RAF staining with those of RF staining (Hanji 1973;Tsubai 1991). The present results of differential staining showed that oxytalan, elaunin and elastic fibers were found in all the articular components of the mandibular joint.…”

“…For LM, mandibular joints were dissected, fixed with 10% formalin and embedded in paraffin following the conventional methods. The samples were sectioned, stained by the Gomori aldehyde fuchsin (AF) method, Weigert resorcin fichsin (RF) method and preoxidation followed by aldehyde fuchsin (PAF) staining and resorcin fuchsin (PRF) staining (Hanji 1973;Tsubai 1991). For survey purposes, some sections were also stained with hematoxylin and eosin.…”
