Study on Mulberry Silk Degumming Process with Cold-Pad-Batch Using Tea Sapogenin

Abstract: The cold-pad-batch technology is applied mainly in the pretreatment and dyeing of cellulosic fabrics and shows lots of advantages such as technique simplicity, low energy consumption and reduced sewage emission especially for productions of multi item and short run. The degumming process of mulberry silk fabrics with “cold-pad-batch” method using tea sapogenin was studied in this paper. The effects of a few factors such as concentration of tea sapogenin, NaOH and Na2S2O4 as well as time on the whiteness and we… Show more

“…Before degumming, due to appearance of the sericin, wax, dyes and impurities, the silk filaments have the lower WI. Once the sericin, wax, dyes and some impurities are almost completely removed, silk filaments have higher WI [17,20,22,68,[76][77][78], and possesses attractive surface luster and smooth feel [79][80][81]. Therefore, in textile field, WI can also be used for evaluation of degumming effect.…”

“…Large-scale extraction of sericin is not possible and commercial viability needs to be assessed [44] Low-temperature temperature oxygen plasma and Low-pressure plasma treatment Improves process-efficiency and reduces energy consumption Process may not be suitable for commercialization [45,46] Cold-pad-batch technology Simple with moderate mode of power consumption, and reduced effluent discharge At higher concentration of alkali, whiteness of sample appears to be increased [47] bromelain concentration to 5 g/L degumming percentage decreased to 90.29 ± 3.72%, whereas the degumming percent was 23.73 ± 1.33% after processing with 5 g/L Na 2 CO 3 for 60 min at 98 °C. The bromelain degummed stuff exhibited a 10% greater improvement reclamation, and its twisting quality was 4% more prominent correlated with the alkali degummed specimen.…”

“…This degumming process began with tea sapogenin along the cold-pad-batch by incorporating it into the pad liquor by padding at room temperature. The pad liquor had some other compounds with the tea sapogenin that were penetrant JFC, sodium disilicate, sodium hydroxide, Lamepon A, and sodium hydrosulfite [47]. The process involves batching of moist fabric 12 to 48 h followed by rinsing with 5 g/L of an aqueous solution of both sodium carbonate and sodium hydrosulfite at temperature 95 °C for 15 min.…”
