Study on Synergies of Fly Ash with Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes in Manufacturing Fire Retardant Epoxy Nanocomposite

Abstract: In this study, fly ash (FA) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used to make environmentally friendly nanocomposites, which have high fire retardant properties and high mechanical properties. Industrial waste such as fly ash has become a major concern during the treatment of environmental pollution. MWCNTs were used in this experiment to enhance the flame retardant properties and mechanical properties of materials with fly ash additives. MWCNTs content (0.03, 0.04, and 0.05 wt.%) and fly ash content… Show more

“…In addition to the study of using fibers of natural origin as reinforcement for polymer composite materials, unidirectional woven fabrics and plain woven fabrics have also been studied by Mostafa et al [19,20]. In order to improve the mechanical and fireproof properties of composite materials, in addition to using plant fibers, artificial fibers, etc., many works have also used typical environmentally friendly additives such as fly ash [21,22], nanoclay [23], multiwalled carbon nanotubes and especially the hybrid between those admixtures: nanoclay/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) [24][25][26] and MWCNTs/fly ash [27], and nanoclay/fly ash [28]. e source of banana fiber is the banana stem (banana tree skin); waste is abundant in many parts of the world.…”

“…However, the disadvantage of epoxy resin is its brittleness. erefore, in order to improve this property, there are many works that have been studied to strengthen it with different materials such as glass fiber, natural fiber, carbon fabric, and nanoadditives (nanoclay [19] and multiwalled carbon nanotubes [20,21]) and hybridize them with fly ash fillers [22][23][24][25], epoxidized linseed oil [26], and so on. Green composite materials are receiving much research attention and have an important role and position in the world of materials science and engineering today because the increasing demand of environmentally friendly materials more and more reduces environmental degradation, reduces pollution, and saves the Earth.…”

“…Additive nanoclay, multiwalled carbon nanotubes are incorporated into epoxy resin to improve mechanical properties while increasing fire retardancy [13][14][15]. Besides, fly ash waste from thermal power plants is also recycled by using it as an additive to composite materials to improve fire resistance [16][17][18][19]. e study of mechanical properties of fiber-reinforced composites is of great interest to many scientists.…”
