Study on the Influence of Introducing Al Transition Layer on Deuterium Resistance of Al2O3 Coating

Abstract: The Al/Al2O3 composite deuterium barrier was deposited on the polished side of 316 L stainless steel by the method of radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. The influence of the introduction of Al transition layer on the deuterium resistance performance of Al2O3 ceramic coating was studied. The field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM), the grazing incident X-ray diffraction technique (GIXRD), and the auger electron spectroscopy (AES) were used to analyze the microscopic morphology, phase, and element d… Show more

“…In particular, problems are caused by the mismatch in thermal expansion between the steel substrate and the oxide ceramic coating. The effects of this mismatch are reduced by introducing a transition layer between the substrate and the permeation barrier consisting of Al [109] or FeAl [110]. It is important to note that both these coating systems exhibit lower effective permeability compared with the single layer Al 2 O 3 coating.…”

“…However, the thermal expansion coefficient of Al 2 O 3 coating and structural materials is quite different, thus the Al 2 O 3 coating is easy to crack and even peel off in a high-temperature environment [15], and the thicker the Al 2 O 3 coating is, the greater the internal stress of the coating, and the easier the coating cracking [16]. To match the coefficient of thermal expansion and improve the bonding strength, the Al transition layer was introduced [17,18]. In a fusion reactor, the nuclear reaction between neutron and 27 Al will produce 24 Na and α particles.…”
