“…Recently, an acute foot-edema of the rat was successfully induced by combined injection of xanthine oxidase (XOD) and hypoxanthine (HPX) , a superoxide generation system, into the hind foot paw; this edema was inhibited by allopurinol, an inhibitor of XOD, or by SOD and catalase (13). XOD and HPX injection are also reported to increase the permeability of blood vessels and PMN infiltration in rat skin (14) and in hamsters (15). In this study, we examined skin erythema induced by intradermal injection of XOD and HPX into guinea pigs and observed the time course of erythema macroscopically and histologically in relationship to the age of the animals as well as to the SOD activity of the skin.…”
