Study on the Multi-Scale Nanocomposite Ceramic Tool Material

Abstract: An advanced ceramic cutting tool material was developed by means of micro-scale SiC particle cooperating with nano-scale SiC particle dispersion. With the optimal dispersing and fabricating technology, this multi-scale nanocomposite may get both higher flexural strength and fracture toughness than that of the single-scale composite. The improved mechanical properties may be mainly attributed to the inter/intragranular microstructure with a lot of micro-scale SiC particles located on the grain boundary and a fe… Show more

“…The multi-scale nanocomposite ceramic tool material ASs was successfully fabricated, its comprehensive mechanical properties are much higher than that of other composites fabricated with single nano-scale SiC or with single micro-scale SiC [10]. Besides the contribution of the ordinary transgranular fracture mode and the refining of matrix grain to the improvement of the mechanical properties, the contribution of special microstructure observed in ASs should not be ignored.…”

“…The well dispersed powder mixture was hot-pressed in nitrogen atmosphere in a graphite mold at 1700 • C under a pressure of 30 MPa to obtain circular disks of approximately 41 mm in diameter and 4.7 mm in thickness. Other detailed procedures for fabricating and testing method were described in literature [10].…”
