Study on the new friction stir spot weld joint reinforcement technique on 5754 aluminum alloy

Abstract: In this study, new friction stir spot welding method was developed using two different tools in order to create a spot weld without keyhole. The effects of process parameters and tool geometry were considered to improve the weld joint properties. The shear-tensile tests and microstructure study showed that the new method could offer superior performance in comparison to conventional friction stir spot welding. By controlling the process parameters, spot welds with strength about 37% higher than the conventiona… Show more

“…Hence the increase in PD results in the formation of hooks at the interface. 3235 The SD and PD have a vital role in obtaining joint with superior interfacial strength. At lower levels of SD and PD, there is poor plasticisation and reduced material flow to obtain a stronger interfacial bonding.…”

“…Samples were coated using a plasma spray method. The Ni5Al (wt %) powder (provided by the Metco company), with particle size of 45–90 μm, was used as a feedstock material [27]. Ni5Al coatings are dense and resistant to oxidation and abrasion, recommended for use as oxidation-resistant bond coats which can be used up to 800 °C (1470 F).…”

“…There are various technique for joining the Al to Cu such as friction stir welding and explosion welding. 4,5 According to novel advantages of Cu and Al bonding based on transient liquid phase bonding (TLP), this technique was considered in this study. Finding the optimum joining condition were considered as the main goal in this research.…”
