IntroductionOccupational noise is among the most critical occupational hazards, which, in addition to hearing loss, can cause other adverse consequences on an individual’s physical and mental health. Long-term exposure to noise can affect blood and biochemical parameters and subsequently lead to increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This study investigated the effect of occupational exposure to noise on blood and biochemical parameters of workers in an insulator manufacturing plant.MethodsThis case-control study was conducted on workers in the production section (49 people as a case group) and the administrative staff (10 people as a control group) in one insulator manufacturing plant from 2010 to 2014. To assess individual exposure of workers to noise, the noise dosimeter model TES-1355 was used. Noise dosimetry testing was done based on the exposure pattern of workers to noise in compliance with the Iranian national standard (the criterion level of 85 dBA and the exchange rate of Q = 3 dBA). Blood parameters such as blood glucose, cholesterol, red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), hemoglobin (Hb), and hematocrit (Hct) were studied in production workers (case) and administrative staff (control) over five consecutive years. The data were analyzed by software (SPSS-22) using the t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Fisher exact test, and Greenhouse-Geisser test.ResultsNo significant difference was found among the demographic data of the two groups (p > 0.05). Average of glucose and cholesterol levels in the two groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05) and blood glucose levels in the case group significantly reduced over time and cholesterol increased (p < 0.001). Mean difference of RBC number, WBC number, and serum levels of Hb and Hct was statistically significant between the two groups (p < 0.05). In addition, these hematological parameters increased among workers during these years.ConclusionOccupational exposure to noise may have a significant effect on an individual’s blood parameters, which will cause harmful effects on worker health. Therefore, industrialists must take preventive measures in the field of noise control.

A Prioritization Approach for Noise Risk Management in a Petrochemical Complex: Parvin NASSIRI, et al. Department of Occupational Health, School of Public Health, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran— Objectives Noise is probably the most common occupational hazard facing workers today. This paper presents a model to evaluate and select a unit as the first priority for implementing noise control measures from the different parts of an industrial complex. Methods For this purpose, a formula was proposed as a priority risk index (NCPI) by considering some criteria, including: the number of exposed workers in each part, their exposure times and the range of sound pressure level. The above criteria were weighed by appending weighting factors, which can be different based upon the environmental noise levels. The environmental noise measurements were also carried out by lattice method according to ISO 9612:2009. At the next stage, the numbers of stations that fell within the desired ranges in the weighting factors table were found. Then the priorities were identified using the above criteria and the NCPI. Results The results indicate that the compression unit of air plant had the highest score among the different departments of the company under study (NCPI=0.3). Using this model is easy and fast. It is applicable to similar industries and also offers valuable information for prioritizing noise control measures. Conclusions Therefore, it will be possible to minimize worker exposure to noise in the most polluted places in any industry by identifying the main noise sources and implementing measures suitable for controlling the risk.

Background: It is essential to decide on where to allocate available resources and identify priorities in noise control. Objectives: This study was performed to prioritize noise control solutions in various units of an oil refinery using the noise control priority index (NCPI). Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in an oil refinery in 2019. The standard of ISO 91612 was applied in the first stage to assess workplaces and determine the values of the noise pressure level (SPL). The activity of stations and the duration of workers’ presence in these stations were determined via interviews with the supervisors and senior personnel of each unit. The NCPI value in various units was determined using three variables, including the number of exposed people, exposure duration, and the weighting factor related to the sound pressure level (SPL). Finally, units were prioritized based on the final NCPI value. Results: Totally, 10 units were assessed based on the ISO9612 standard. The results revealed that 8.09% of the assessed stations were in the safe zone, 62.24% in the warning zone, and 29.66% in the hazard zone. The highest noise emission was related to the NTA unit (98 dB), and the lowest noise emission was observed in the spherical reservoir unit (84 dB). The NTA unit with 12 workers had the highest noise control priority index (1.25) among the units. Conclusions: The NCPI index makes it possible to appropriately prioritize noise control solutions in various industrial units and also implement technical and noise control plans in the oil and gas industries.
