Study on the operating parameters of the 10 kW SOFC-CHP system with syngas

Abstract: Solid oxide fuel cell combined with heat and power (SOFC-CHP) system is a distributed power generation system with low pollution and high efficiency. In this paper, a 10 kW SOFC-CHP system model using syngas was built in Aspen plus. Key operating parameters, such as steam to fuel ratio, stack temperature, reformer temperature, air flow rate, and air preheating temperature, were analyzed. Optimization was conducted based on the simulation results. Results suggest that higher steam to fuel ratio is beneficial to… Show more

“…The prevailing mechanism of the reduction of the NiO by the hydrogen is as follows (9)(10)(11)(12). ( 1) The H2 is adsorbed and dissociated by the NiO initially during the induction period and then by the previously formed Ni metal gradually at the growing interface; (2) The hydrogen molecules diffuse to the surface of the reactive center; (3) The Ni-O bonds rupture to produce Ni 0 atoms; (4) The Ni 0 atoms nucleate into the Ni metallic clusters; (5) The Ni metal clusters grow into crystallite. During the production of the Ni, the H2O is also produced.…”

“…The main function of the electrolyte is conducting the oxygen ion (4). The electrode of the SOFC is porous, which is supposed to satisfy the requirements of higher heat stability, structural stability, catalytic activity and electrical conductivity in the operating temperature of 600 -1000℃ (5,6). At present, the most widely used anode material is the Ni/YSZ.…”

“…What is more, the SOFC operates at high temperature (600℃-1000℃), and thus the thermal energy from exhaust gas of the SOFC can also be used in the ship, such as heating the domestic water, heavy fuel oil and lubricating oil. Therefore, the SOFC can provide both thermal energy and electrical energy for the ship, making the overall efficiency of the SOFC reach approaximately 90% [28][29][30] .…”

“…One direction in the modern transition to alternative energy sources is the use of hydrogen, which can be obtained in its pure form from solid fuel syngas [5,9]. Syngas with a high hydrogen content is also used in power plants with solid oxide fuel cells [10].…”
