Study on the spur involute gear meshing with planar enveloping hourglass worm based on local conjugate

Abstract: In this paper, a novel multitooth point contact hourglass worm drive is proposed, which is composed of a planar enveloping hourglass worm and a spur involute gear, and both of them can be hardened and precisely ground. This novel hourglass worm drive is also named as involute gear meshing with planar enveloping hourglass worm drive (IP hourglass worm drive). Based on the gear geometry theory and the medium gear, the mathematical models of IP hourglass worm drive are deduced, the theory of tooth contact analysi… Show more

“…Zou (Zou et al, 2020) proposed a backlash control method for beveloid gears and carried out backlash control experiments under alternating load conditions. Chen (Chen et al, 2019) established a mathematical model of the involute beveloid gear enveloped toroidal worm drive pair, and investigated the effect of design parameters (helix angle, transmission ratio, normal modulus, and pressure angle) on gear meshing. Wu (Wu et al, 2009) proposed an approach for loaded tooth contact analysis of skew conical gear drives in approximate line contact.…”

“…The gear tooth surface of the worm gear is smooth, and is shaped by a flying tool whose cutting edge is identical to the profile of the entering edge of the worm. Chen et al [17] presented a novel hourglass worm drive named as involute gear meshing with a planar-enveloping hourglass worm drive. They studied the theory of tooth contact analysis of the hourglass worm drive, which is developed based on numerical and finite element analyses.…”

“…4,5 In identical dimensions of a worm pair, the number of simultaneous meshing teeth of the hourglass worm gears is more than the number of the cylindrical worm pair. 68 In aspect of microcosmic engaging performance, hourglass worm drives have a greater radius of induced normal curvature, distribution of the instantaneous contact line nearly tooth height direction, larger lubrication angular, 9 etc. Therefore, the bearing capacity and transmission performance of the hourglass worm gears is outstanding, and then they are widely used in metallurgy, mining, petroleum, and other heavy-duty transmission applications.…”
