Study on the tribological properties of modified polyurethane material for water‐lubricated stern bearing

Abstract: Polyurethane (PU) has been studied as alternative bearing material for marine water-lubricated stern tube due to its excellent wear resistance, remarkable mechanical properties and so on. In this study, nine types of PU samples which are composed of different additives were prepared and tested in order to investigate their tribological properties under various working conditions. A pin-on-disc tribo-tester was used to conduct tests. Then comparison analyses were conducted from three aspects, including the fric… Show more

“…Five different polyurethane materials were prepared for testing, and different MOCA dosage factors were used for the five materials (NH 2 /NCO, mass ratio of amines curing agent, and PU prepolymers) The five ratios chosen were 0.90, 0.95, 1.00, 1.05, and 1.10 because the polyurethane materials showed superior performance in this range of chain expansion factors in previous studies 34 . The calculation formula is as follows 34 mcagoodbreak=mpre×NCO%×133.5×f42, where, f is the cross‐linked chain expansion coefficient (NH 2 /NCO), m ca is the mass required for MOCA, m pre is the mass required for prepolymer, weight % of the isocyanate group of prepolymer NCO%, 133.5 is the amine equivalent of MOCA, the amine equivalent is the average molecular mass occupied by each functional group, and the relative molecular mass of MOCA is 267, contains two amino groups and the molar mass of the NCO group is 42.…”

“…The tribological properties of polyurethane composites modified with polyethylene wax are better than those of THORON and other commercial materials under high temperatures and high loads. Based on previous research, the researchers compared the effect of high temperature on the wear resistance of water‐lubricated bearings by comparing the thermal conductivity of different metal wires through experiments 34–37 . However, when using these methods, several issues related to the reaction process and the material itself need to be considered, the dispersion of the filler in the matrix, the effect of the filler on the internal structure of the material, and the degree of bonding with the matrix inside the material.…”

“…4 However, traditional polyurethane workpieces possess a large friction coefficient and poor wear resistance, limiting their large-scale applications in high friction fields. 5 It is a hot topic and a challenge to improve the tribological properties of polyurethane. As we know, the most common strategy for enhancing the friction and wear properties of materials is to add solid 6−8 or liquid lubricating materials.…”

“…Moreover, the contact pressure that influenced by the tilt of the ships are very complex and the working experimental velocities are in a wide range. In this case, it is very difficult to guarantee a stable working condition for the water‐lubricated bearings 27,28 . The water‐lubricated bearing often works under varying contact pressures and velocities.…”
