Study on the variation in and selection of Fraxinus mandshurica provenances and families in northeast China

Abstract: Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr. is one of the main afforestation species in northeast China, and there is great demand for improved F. mandshurica varieties. The results of an investigation into and analysis of the growth traits of F. mandshurica provenances and families showed that there were significant differences in different periods. However, variations in growth traits decreased year by year. There was a significant negative correlation between tree heights of the provenances and sunshine hours in their areas… Show more

“…The phenotypic coefficient of variation is an important indicator in the evaluation and selection of high-quality materials for experimentation [41]. Typically, materials with a larger degree of variability are selected for such purposes (less than 10% is low PCV, 10-20% is moderate, and more than 20% is high).…”

“…The phenomenon of thermodormancy gains ecologic and economic relevance with climate change, as increasing temperatures are expected in temperate and boreal regions [4]. Heat spells or prolonged warm periods in regions where species with thermodormant seeds are frequent may reduce their seed germination efficiency, seedling emergence and overall yield, causing significant economic losses to agriculture and forestry [5]. Dormancy can be classified as exogenous or endogenous.…”

“…According to the ninth forest resource inventory report [18], the area of Chinese fir plantations is 9.902 million hm 2 , accounting for 17.33% of the total forest area, and the storage volume is 755.4501 million cubic meters, accounting for 22.30% of the total, ranking first in the area and storage of artificial arbor forests in China. The selection of tree species provenance plays an important role in tree genetic improvement and the foundation of tree breeding [19]. In 1976, China established a national Chinese fir geographical provenance experiment collaboration group to carry out Chinese fir provenance experiments due to the limited application of improved Chinese fir varieties and the low productivity during afforestation [20].…”
