Study on the Viscoelastic Poisson‘s Ratio of Solid Propellants Using Digital Image Correlation Method

Abstract: Digital image correlation methods were used for further studies of the viscoelastic Poisson's ratio of solid propellants. The Poisson's ratio and the Young's relaxation modulus of solid propellants were separately determined in a single stress relaxation test. In addition, the effects of temperature, longitudinal strain, preload and storage time on the Poisson's ratio of solid propellants were discussed. The Poisson's ratio master curve and the Young's relaxation modulus master curve were constructed based on … Show more

“…The mechanical property parameters of each component material of the motor are shell elastic modulus 2:05 × 10 5 MPa and Poisson's ratio 0.28, and Poisson of propellant is 0.496. The relaxation modulus of low-temperature insulation, cladding, and propellant are measured, and Prony series is proposed (take N items) [20,21]: where E ∞ is the permanent relaxation modulus (t ⟶ ∞), E n is the elastic modulus (the n th Maxwell unit), and τ n is the relaxation time.…”

“…Physically, the complex Poisson's ratio is defined as the ratio of lateral strain to axial strain. Assuming application of a dynamic strain in the longitudinal direction, the lateral strain is delayed in relation to the axial strain due to the energy dissipation capacity of the material (Theocaris, 1968;Kugler et al, 1990;Pritz, 1998;Cui et al, 2016). As a result, if the dynamic axial strain is a harmonic function, represented in the complex form according to…”

“…The identification of the complex Poisson's ratio in the frequency domain can be performed through direct or indirect methods (Pritz, 1998;Tschoegl et al, 2002). In direct methods, the ratio can be obtained from measurements performed directly on the structure (Kabeer et al 2013;Cui et al 2016). On the other hand, in indirect methods, the identification occurs by constructing and evaluating auxiliary complex viscoelastic functions (Young's, shear and/or bulk modulus).…”

“…Given that the grain structure is rationally designed, when the comprehensive mechanical properties of propellants are good or the working temperature is not very low, the structural integrity of grain usually can be ensured under the working pressure [3]. Also, the influence from the case stiffness is not obvious, and the case design can meet the requirement of the internal pressure strength will be enough [4][5][6]. As for tactic motors in service at low temperatures, explosions occur from time to time in the ground test when the motor is working [7,8].…”
