Study the antimicrobial effects of chitosan-based edible film containing the Trachyspermum ammi essential oil on shelf-life of chicken meat

Abstract: Packaging using chitosan-based edible films incorporated with natural essential oils is a safe and economic way to increase the shelf-life and acceptability of food products and especially chicken meat. Trachyspermum ammi is a natural medicinal plant with high antimicrobial effects cultivated in Iran. The present research was done to study the antimicrobial effects of chitosan-based edible film containing T. ammi essential oil on shelf-life of chicken meat. T. ammi fruits were collected and dried. Essential oi… Show more

“…A previous study showed that the total aerobic mesophilic bacteria count on chicken thigh meats surpassed the limit of acceptance at the 7th day for the control sample without modified atmosphere packaging but surpassed this limit at day 19 for the sample with modified atmosphere packaging and iron-based oxygen scavengers [48]. Another study showed the extended lifespan of chicken wrapped with a chitosan film, and 2% Trachyspermum ammi essential oil had an antimicrobial activity (p < 0.05) on the total psychrophilic, total aerobic, and coliform bacteria [49]. However, the advantage of using sage is its ease of accessibility as a plant product.…”

“…Chitosan-based edible film showed enhanced inhibitory effects against coliform bacteria, TVC, and PTC with the incorporation of Trachyspermum ammi EO, which subsequently extended the shelf-life of meat [135]. Potato starch/apple peel pectin-based composite film containing microencapsulated Zataria multiflora essential oil and ZrO 2 nanoparticles was used for quail meat packaging.…”

“…The successful use of chitosan has been proven to inhibit the growth of coliform bacteria in chicken meat with the addition of Trachyspermum ammi essential oil (Karimnezhad et al, 2017), mixed with rosemary essential oil (Souza et al, 2019), and mixed with Artemisia fragrans essential oil in refrigerator storage (Yaghoubi et al, 2021).…”
