Studying Emotion Regulation with Daily Diaries and Ecological Momentary Assessment

Abstract: Emotion regulation is inherently dynamic, unfolding iteratively over time and in reciprocal relation with other psychological processes. This makes emotion regulation a prime candidate for study using daily life methods--also known as ambulatory assessment or intensive longitudinal methods--which involve frequent active (e.g., via self-report) or passive (e.g., via sensors) sampling of experience, context, behavior, or physiology over time in naturalistic settings. In this chapter, we focus on the application … Show more

“…After the online screener, participants were provided times they could self-schedule for an in-person baseline visit, which included an assessment of pain and mental health administered by a trained research assistant and a series of self-report questionnaires. Participants were then instructed to download the Smartphone Ecological Momentary Assessment (SEMA) mobile application to their smartphone to complete the EMAs, 44 and provided a tutorial on how to use the application, approximately when notifications would arrive, and how to contact technical support as needed. SEMA is an open-sourced mobile application designed for EMA research and allows for random assessment times to increase the validity of the findings 30 .…”

“…Once the written informed consent and assent is given, families will complete a battery of questionnaires as baseline measures before the surgery via direct link to the online questionnaires (see next section and table 1 for an overview; see online supplemental file 1 for an overview of reliability, validity, benefits and limitations of all questionnaires), using Research Electronic Data Capture (RedCap 46 ). In addition, participants will be asked to download the smartphone application SEMA V.3, 47 a free tool for ecological momentary assessment provided by the University of Melbourne, Australia, especially developed for research needs.…”

“…For post-and follow-up assessments, an additional reminder is sent out. For EMA surveys, participants are prompted 3 times a day: in the morning before school or work, in the afternoon after school or work, and in the evening with the Smartphone Ecological Momentary Assessment application (SEMA 3 app) [65].…”
