Studying texts in a second language: No disadvantage in long-term recognition memory

Abstract: Despite an increase in bilingualism and the use of English as a medium of instruction, little research has been done on bilingual memory for learnt information. In a previous study, we found an L2 recall cost but equal recognition performance in L2 versus L1 when students studied short expository texts (Vander Beken & Brysbaert, 2017). In this paper, we investigate whether there is a recognition cost after a longer delay, which would indicate that the memory trace is weaker in L2. Results showed equal perf… Show more

“…It consists of 60 items with five response alternatives, the last always being “I really don’t know”. Vander Beken, Woumans, and Brysbaert ( 2018 ) developed another multiple choice receptive vocabulary test for the same population. It consists of 75 items with four response alternatives, all presented in written form.…”

“…The working memory is essential for cognitive and linguistic processing. In the field of human information processing the resource hypothesis assumes that the cognitive burden of processing in L2 is greater, leaving less working-memory capacity free for other processes (Vander Beken, Woumans, & Brysbaert, 2017). The human working memory incorporates a temporary information-storage system, on which we draw for the further cognitive manipulation of information.…”

“…The emergence of this sub-topic coincides with English as a medium of instruction (EMI) programmes increasing in European universities to attract international students and staff (Dafouz, et al 2014;Goodman, 2014). These programmes have resulted in an increasing number of studies focused on the relationship between native language, language of instruction and students' academic success at university (Vander Beken, et al, 2018;Dafouz and Camacho-Miñano, 2016;Dafouz, et al 2014;Civan and Coşkun, 2016). However, the research thus far has focused predominantly on academic outcomes and memory.…”
