Sub-15 nm CeO2 nanowires as an efficient non-noble metal catalyst in the room-temperature oxidation of aniline

Abstract: We described the facile synthesis of sub-15 nm CeO2 nanowires for catalyzing the selective synthesis of nitrosobenzene from aniline at room temperature.

“…As demonstrated in Figure S9c, the integrated intensity of these peaks is 9 times higher for the CeO 2 nanowires when compared to the CeO 2 nanocubes that can be understood as a dramatical increase of oxygen vacancies. It is noticeable that the CeO 2 nanostructure exposing {110} and {100} facets (nanowires) generated more oxygen vacancies in comparison to {100} ones, in agreement with the literature [24] . The oxygen vacancies increased 5 and 1.2 times after metal impregnation on the CeO 2 nanocubes and CeO 2 nanowires, respectively.…”

“…However, herein the Pt/CeO 2 nanowires are less active than Pt/CeO 2 nanowires, which contradicts some studies [2,78] . Also, literature discusses the best activities associated with single atoms due to their higher atom efficiency and the increased capacity to create active interfacial sites, [13,14,24] suggesting that isolated single‐atoms of Pt or corner atoms on Pt NPs are highly active for CO oxidation [13,14] …”

“…25 It is possible to observe that all the diffraction peaks of the ceria nanowire are broader and in less intensity in relation to the commercial ceria, which may be related to the formation of smaller crystallites. 23 In the commercial Ni/C-CeO 2 diffractogram, except for the peak at 38.6°, all other peaks present in the material can be clearly seen. Figure 2a shows an image obtained by transmission electron microscopy of Ni/C material.…”
