Sub-5 nm lanthanide-doped lutetium oxyfluoride nanoprobes for ultrasensitive detection of prostate specific antigen

Abstract: We demonstrate the successful use of sub-5 nm Lu6O5F8:Eu3+ nano-bioprobes for the ultrasensitive detection of prostate specific antigen in patient serum samples with a limit of detection of 0.52 pg mL–1.

“…This chemical damage from weak acid was also found in other rare earth fluoride nanocrystals, such as NaEuF 4 53 and Lu 6 O 5 F 8 . 54 We attributed this to the dissociation of Ln-F bonds of the NaYF 4 nanocrystals in the solution with low pH (r3). We further measured the spectra of NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ core-only and core-shell UCNPs in Milli-Q water at various temperatures from 10 1C to 80 1C (shown in Fig.…”

“…As UC fluorescence probes in biological detections and imaging, these Ln 3+ -doped UCNPs should emit strong UC luminescence under infrared excitation in order to achieve high sensitivity and resolution. In the most of cases, the UCNPs are also required to have both small size (sub-50 nm) and hydrophilic surface in order to meet the post biological functionalization [ 9 14 ]. Among numerous UC materials, Ln 3+ activator-doped rare earth fluorides, especially hexagonal phase NaREF 4 (RE = Y, Gd, Lu), are considered ideal candidates for probes because of their efficient UC luminescence.…”
