Sub-chronic hepatotoxicity of Anacardium occidentale (Anacardiaceae) inner stem bark extract in rats

Abstract: The extracts of Anacardium occidentale have been used in the management of different cardiovascular disorders in Nigeria. These have necessitated the assessment of the toxicity of this plant extract in sub-chronic administration. The inner stem bark of Anacardium occidentale was extracted with 80 % methanol and quantitatively analysed for antinutrients and some heavy metals. The phytochemical compositions and acute toxicity of the extract were determined also. Toxicity profiles of the extract on some liver fun… Show more

“…anti-inflammatory for the ovaries and / or uterus, abortive, for sexual impotence/aphrod isiac Administration via oral of extract to mice had LD 50 of 2.154 g/kg (Okonkwo et al, 2010) The LD50 of the hexane extract, determined in mice after oral administration was 16 g/kg (Tédong, 2007) Hepatotoxic effect (increased the serum levels of alanine aminotransaminase and aspartate aminotransaminase) in mice (Okonkwo, 2010) and dogs (de Melo, 2006) Anorexia, diarrhea, and syncope in mice with doses higher than 6g/kg (Tédong, 2007) Single oral dose of anacardic acid (2000 mg/kg) has not produced biochemical and hematological alterations in BALB/c mice (Carvalho, 2011) NDF…”

“…Polyphenolic tannins have been reported to exhibit metal ions chelating properties that can help in mopping up trivalent arsenite upon exposure. [31] However, tannins can be poisonous by depriving the body of essential metal ions needed for proper functioning.…”
