Sub-clinical middle ear malfunctions in elderly patients; prevalence, pattern and predictors

Abstract: BackgroundLittle is known about functioning of the middle ear with advancing age.ObjectivesTo estimate the prevalence and describe tympanometric patterns of sub-clinical middle ear malfunctions,( S-MEM) in elderly patients. It also assessed clinical factors that could predict S-MEM.MethodsCross-sectional, analytical study of patients aged ≥ 60 years in a tertiary hospital in Nigeria between 2011–2014. Pure tone audiometry (PTA), tympanometry and acoustic reflexes were recorded. S-MEM was based on audiometric a… Show more

“…Middle ear function can also be evaluated by impedance audiometry or tympanometry which renders specific graphs for ear pathologies [8]. Applying this tool in ET dysfunction is not yet well recognized systematically.…”

“…Applying this tool in ET dysfunction is not yet well recognized systematically. A type C tympanogram reflects an ET dysfunction, which is a frequent pattern of subclinical middle ear malfunctions [8,16]. Although a negative middle ear tube pressure on tympanometry, especially when the peak is below − 100 daPa, can indicate an ET dysfunction, the diagnosis remains presumably clinical.…”
