Subareolar Breast Abscesses: Characteristics and Results of Surgical Treatment

Abstract: Our objective was to describe the characteristics of subareolar breast abscesses and to analyze the results of surgical treatment in relation to the prevention of recurrences. Almost 70% of patients smoked more than 10 cigarettes a day. The recurrence rate after excision of the lactiferous ducts was 28% and after management without excision of the lactiferous ducts was 79% (p < 0.001). Gram-positive bacteria were isolated more frequently in primary subareolar breast abscesses (not significant). Anaerobic micro… Show more

“…Male subareolar abscess is a localized infection secondary to ductal ectasia, chronic obstruction, and inflammation [1,6]. Smoking is recognized as an aggravation factor, and almost 70% of patients smoked more than 10 cigarettes a day [6, 7].…”

“…The need to excised dilated lactiferous terminals is no longer debated nowadays but the techniques vary [10][11][12][13]. In a series of 204 periareolar abscesses, Lesanka Versluijs-Ossewaarde reported a 79% recurrence rate if surgical excision did not included the lactiferous ducts versus 28% when the terminal lactiferous ducts were excised [14]. Some authors resected only the specific lactiferous ducts involved in the fistula, while others preferred excision of all retro-areolar galactophores [15] (The latter is also our choice for patients with multiply recurrent abscesses).…”
