Subclinical intestinal duplication in a cat

Abstract: An abdominal mass was identified upon palpation of the abdomen in a normal, asymptomatic, 1-year-old female domestic shorthair cat presented for elective ovariohysterectomy. Radiographic and ultrasound examinations demonstrated a well-circumscribed caudal abdominal mass. Ultrasound guided needle aspiration cytology was consistent with an accumulation of squamous epithelial cells. The mass was associated with the jejunum and was excised via resection anastomosis of the intestinal segment after ovariohysterectom… Show more

“…The four layers (mucosa, submucosa, muscularis and serosa) of the normal intestine wall are usually evident in the wall of the enteric duplication. A common muscular layer is present between the duplicated intestine and its adjacent bowel (Spaulding et al 1990;Deftereos et al 2004; Cheng et al 2005;Radlinsky et al 2005). In the present case, a multi-layered appearance of the small intestine was identified.…”

“…Enteric duplication is a rare developmental malformation in veterinary medicine (Radlinsky et al 2005 ;Kook et al 2010). Grossly, duplicated intestinal segments are usually blind sacs or cysts that share a wall with the normal intestine (Spaulding et al 1990).…”

“…The single duplication described in a cat was located in the midjejunum but lined with esophagus-type epithelium. 7 In general, the case presented here shares all characteristics of intestinal duplications: a location adjacent to the intestinal lumen, a wall composed of smooth muscles, and a lining by intestine-like mucosa. 2 All structures of a regular intestinal wall were present in 1 cyst, whereas the mucosal lining was absent in the remaining 2 and instead replaced by granulation tissue.…”

“…2,5,9 Documented cases in animals cover dogs, a cat, foals, and goats. 3,4,[6][7][8] Their localization in the alimentary tract and their inner lining may differ widely, and diverse theories in terms of their formation during embryogenesis have been discussed. 5 Here, we describe the first case of multiple intestinal duplications in the jejunum of a cat.…”

“…The clinical signs range from partial or complete intestinal tract obstruction to melaena and pancreatitis, but the malformation may also be an incidental finding (Radlinsky and others 2005). In children, duodenal duplications are a rare but well-known differential diagnosis for upper intestinal tract obstruction and comprise 5 to 10 per cent of intestinal duplications (Berrocal and others 1999, Guarise and others 2006).…”
