“…This difference is important because even though pgWAT, unlike omental fat, does not have direct access to the portal vein, the accumulation of pgWAT also results in metabolic disturbances in mice. Moreover, studies in mice have shown that transplantation of SAT from lean mice into the visceral cavity has beneficial effects on body weight, glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity in lean (Tran et al, 2008) and obese (Foster et al, 2013;Hocking et al, 2015) mice. However, the transplantation of pgWAT to subcutaneous sites has resulted in either no (Barrera et al, 2012;Tran et al, 2008) or some metabolic advantages (Satoor et al, 2011;Tran and Kahn, 2010).…”

“…Other HFD studies of Osborne‐Mendel rats , Wistar rats , C57BL/6 , cafeteria‐fed Lister hooded rats and C3H Manchester mice reported increased BF and FI following the diet and surgery compared with chow‐fed animals and increased BW only in Stephens et al . Similarly, an HFD led to increased BW and FI in C57BL/6 mice following WAT being removed or transplanted compared with controls. In contrast, male Wistar rats that underwent BAT and WAT lipectomy or transplantation and were fed either a HFD or high‐carbohydrate diet had decreased BW and BF .…”

“…Overall, C57BL/6J mice with WAT or BAT removed had inconclusive results (e.g., some subgroups had lipectomized animals with either a lower BW or no significant changes in BW) . Similarly, C57BL/6J ob/ob mice had no changes in BW or had mixed results.…”

“…Dietary, surgical and genetic manipulations in male rodents have shown that inflammation, visceral fat and hepatic steatosis are strong determinants shifting obesity towards metabolic disease . In particular, hepatic steatosis may lead to insulin resistance independent of weight gain .…”
