Subcutaneous injection technique: an evidence-based approach

Abstract: Injections are routinely administered by nurses in acute care settings and in the community. Nurses require a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, pharmacological principles and equipment, and potential risks to the patient of injections. Nurses should also take an active approach to patient assessment before injecting medicines. This article, the first of two, provides an evidence-based review of injection administration, with particular reference to subcutaneous injections, and suggests a framew… Show more

“…Injections under the skin and into the muscle, particularly if they are accidental, could cause physical damage to tissues as a result of poor injection technique (Nicoll & Hesby, 2002;Ogston-Tuck, 2014). In addition, the two most commonly injected psychoactive drugs in the United Kingdom, brown heroin and crack-cocaine, both need to be dissolved in acidic solutions (Scott, Winfield, Kennedy, & Bond, 2000;Scott & Ponton, 2004).…”

“…Although appropriate subcutaneous injection technique requires skills and knowledge that are taught in standard nursing education programs worldwide, criticisms prevail regarding practitioners’ unsafe injection practices. These include lack of current knowledge, slapdash technique, and lack of aspiration with regard to imparting improved long-term clinical outcomes for patients ( 5 ).…”
