Subcutaneous panniculitis‐like T‐cell lymphoma: Pediatric case series demonstrating heterogeneous presentation and option for watchful waiting

Abstract: Subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) and primary cutaneous gamma delta T-cell lymphoma (PCGD-TCL) were initially both classified as subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma. In 2008, SPTCL with alpha-beta T-cell receptor subtype was separated from primary cutaneous gamma delta T-cell lymphomas (PCGD-TCL). We report four pediatric cases that demonstrate the heterogeneity of each disease and show that PCGD-TCL in children can have an indolent course, whereas SPTCL can behave aggressively.… Show more

“…The estimated survival of the first is 80% and the second 10% to 5 years 21 . We reviewed 9 pediatric cases described in the literature [17][18][19][20][21][22][23] , and we found some similar features with the present clinical case, as the presence of erythematous-violaceous non-ulcerated few sensitive nodules in the anterior abdominal wall, dorsum and extremities, nodules of insidious installation and evolution in outbreaks. In 6 of the 9 cases there was concomitance with PFS and 7 of them, kept their weight 17,18,22,23 .…”

“…Numerous cases have now been reported in children. 127132 A subsequent study of cutaneous lymphomas in children noted that SPTCL was rare with only 3.4% of cases in this age-group. 66 The lesions are nodules/tumors or cutaneous plaques, which can vary in diameter from 1 to 20 cm or more.…”

“…Subcutaneous panniculitis‐like T‐cell lymphoma (SPTCL) is a neoplasm of mature TCRαβ positive cytotoxic T cells that is known to occur in all paediatric age groups (Huppmann et al , ; Hu et al , ; Johnston et al , ). Patients present with multiple, variably‐sized nodules in the trunk and extremities.…”

“…The malignant cells are positive for CD3, CD56, TCRγ and negative for CD4, CD8, CD5 and TCRβ (BF1). Though PCGDTCL is considered to be more aggressive, occasional cases with an indolent clinical course have been described (Johnston et al , ).…”
