Subharmonics and chaos in switched reluctance motor drives

Abstract: In this paper, the investigation of the nonlinear dynamics of an adjustable-speed switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive with voltage pulse width modulation (PWM) regulation is carried out. Nonlinear iterative mappings based on both nonlinear and approximately linear flux linkage models are derived, hence the corresponding subharmonic and chaotic behaviors are analyzed. Although both flux linkage models can produce similar results, the nonlinear one offers the merit of accuracy but with the sacrifice of computa… Show more

“…Under certain operating conditions, complex non‐linear phenomena can be observed in switched reluctance (SR) drive systems. Previously, the preliminary studies of chaos in the voltage‐controlled and hysteresis‐controlled SR drives have been reported in [14, 15]; the simulated results of non‐linear behaviours in linear SRM have been demonstrated in [16]. The examination of non‐linear dynamics in the SR drive with delayed feedback control has been presented in [17].…”

“…In Li et al (2014), the chaotic behavior of BLDCM and its applications is studied and the a feedback controller is proposed. In Chen et al (2002), by the use of the bifurcation diagrams the chaotic behavior is analyzed and the speed regulation problem is investigated by pulse width modulation approach. The stability of chaotic behavior of BLDCMs is studied in Zhang et al (2016) by time-invariant set and Lyapunov theorem.…”

“…It can also inherently operate with extremely long constant power range and highly favorable for vehicle traction application [Ehsani et al, 2007]. Within the past decades, the research and development on SRM drives have been focused on the motor topology design and optimization as well as the motor control strategies [Zhan et al, 1999;Chen et al, 2001;Chen et al, 2002;Chau and Chen, 2002;Chau and Chen, 2003]. Nevertheless, a number of converter topologies for SRM drives have also been proposed, such as the 1-switch per phase, 2-switch per phase, (n + 1)-switch, 2(n + 1)-switch, C-dump and Oulton types [Miller, 1993].…”
