Subjective cognitive impairment of older adults: a comparison between the US and China

Abstract: Subjective assessment may be incomparable across countries due to differences in reporting styles. Based on two nationally representative surveys from the US and China, this study used data from three anchoring vignettes to estimate to what extent the US and Chinese older adults aged 50 and above differed in their reporting styles of subjective cognitive impairment. Cross country differences of subjective cognitive impairment were then estimated, both before and after adjusting for reporting heterogeneity. Dir… Show more

“…Several limitations of this study should be addressed. First, SCD is a heterogeneous state and it is affected by the cultural background [ 14 , 15 ]. Previous studies on its metabolism were inconsistent [ 12 , 13 , 30 , 31 , 33 35 ], and our results led to new conclusions.…”

“…FDG-PET images were used to detect glucose metabolism in brains in vivo. SCD subjects from Han populations were included in this study to exclude the possible influence of different cultural backgrounds [ 14 , 15 ]. To reduce the influence of data selection, the subjects in our study were from two tertiary medical centers, and we performed permutation tests and repeated cross-validations to improve the robustness of the results.…”

“…This highlights the importance of not solely relying on psychometric data for diagnostic purpose, but also integrating information on the reported course of cognitive change and their impact on daily function for individual patients. However, it is important to note that individuals’ perception of their own cognition, mood, and general health, and their subjective complaints are not free for cultural bias either (Karasz, 2005; Jürges, 2007; Mograbi et al, 2012; Wu, 2016; Molina, 2017; Rossouw et al, 2018).…”

“…Finally, cultural factors were found to impact SCD by a cross-cultural comparison between the USA and China,21 which indicates the need for SCD research in China. SILCODE is a longitudinal study in China, and the implementation of SILCODE would provide characteristics of SCD in China, which contribute to the harmonisation of the SCD concept across cultural borders.…”

“…Though some longitudinal and observational studies of SCD are ongoing,18–20 there are few data available from China or anywhere else in Asia. However, SCD is subject to influence by various cultural factors including factors that relate to language, social stigmatisation of cognitive problems, styles of responding on self-reported measures (eg, extremity of answers), tolerance of slowly progressive cognitive decline in ageing and others 21. The association between objective cognitive performance and SCD is different across races 22.…”
