Submillimeter Choroidal Melanoma Detection by Enhanced Depth Imaging Optical Coherence Tomography in a Patient With Oculodermal Melanocytosis

Abstract: Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography is a useful tool in the evaluation of eyes with oculodermal melanocytosis, permitting high-resolution visualization of the choroid and detection of submillimeter early melanoma that might not be apparent with indirect ophthalmoscopy or ultrasonography.

“…As OCT has evolved, greater resolution and depth of imaging have led to new applications within ocular oncology [2,3,4]. Handheld spectral-domain OCT (HHSD OCT) allows for imaging in the supine position [5] and therefore is becoming a useful tool in the care of children with retinoblastoma [6].…”

“…There are sparse reports in the literature of patients of uveal metastasis initially diagnosed as CSC. These have been mainly due to metastatic cutaneous melanoma [ 4 , 5 ]. Furthermore, patients presenting with MEK-inhibitor-associated retinopathy have been similarly thought to have CSC [ 6 ].…”

“…Like the skin, melanomas developing from the ocular aspect of nevus of Ota appear to be more common in females (Table 2). Twelve of the 16 cases of ocular melanoma occurred in women, suggesting an estimated 3 : 1 female‐to‐male ratio 13,18‐32 . The melanomas were reported in adult patients, with no pediatric cases published.…”

“…All patients without metastasis had great prognoses regardless of treatment modality. The most commonly offered treatment was enucleation or extirpation of the orbit, however multiple patients opted for plaque radiotherapy after declining the former options 23,29 . Interestingly, the majority of cases that received plaque radiotherapy saw no recurrences within the follow‐up periods provided, aside from one case that recurred 3 years later, necessitating enucleation at that time with no recurrences thereafter 32 .…”
