Subsequent reproductive outcome in couples with repeated pregnancy loss

Abstract: While the role of cytogenetic study in couples with repeated pregnancy loss is well-established, little information is available for counseling these couples concerning future reproductive outcome. Couples evaluated by chromosome analysis for recurrent abortion between 1972 and 1979 were contacted by phone in 1981. Of those studied cytogenetically, 195 couples (50.1%) could be located, and information concerning outcome of subsequent pregnancies were obtained. Couples (91) with two consecutive pregnancy losses… Show more

“…abortions (Turleau et al, 1979;Antich et al, 1980;Ward et al, 1980;Simpson et al, 1981;Husslein et al, 1982;Michels et al, 1982;Osztovics et al, 1982;Diedrich et al, 1983;FitzSimmons et al, 1983;Fryns et al, 1984) is 4 : 14, a figure similar to the ratio of 10 : 26 ascertained in the prenatal diagnosis (Van Dyke et al, 1983;Hook et al, 1984). These arguments lead us to suppose that paracentric inversions are associated with spontaneous abortions at least in some inversion carriers.…”

“…En effet, dans cette population le taux d'APL peut atteindre 20 % [16,17] et il est encore difficile à l'heure actuelle d'é liminer formellement une autre cause. Dans cette population, le risque de ré cidive à la grossesse suivante est estimé entre 25 et 30 %, taux proche du taux de ré cidive sous traitement dans ces populations de SAPL [18,19].…”

“…In addition, when endometriosis was treated in this subgroup of women, the post-treatment abortion rate was 33% which is still elevated and not different from the anticipated rates of 23 to 32% of having an abortion in the next pregnancy after having two or three consecutive abortions. [39][40][41] One might even present arguments that the repeated failure to achieve a full-term pregnancy is a risk factor for developing endometriosis.…”

“…Thus, comparison of pretreatment with post-treatment rates fails to consider that the majority of pregnancies will be successful regardless of any therapy even in women with repeated pregnancy losses. [39][40][41] Consequently, comparisons of post-treatment rates should be made with anticipated rates, or with the rates of an untreated control population.…”
