Substance Use Disorders Among Danish Physicians

Abstract: Around 50% of physicians reported that their "SUD knowledge" was relevant, but limited or not satisfactory. One-third never experienced openness about SUD at work. More than half wished to encourage a colleague with SUD to seek treatment. Three quarters of the physicians with unhealthy substance use reported that they found it irrelevant to seek help.

“…A similar proportion of the health professionals (66-69%) say they acted upon an actual impairment or incompetence presumption [5,32], including talking with the colleague, reporting the colleague to the board of the organization or other relevant authority, or discussing the experience with colleagues. These studies did not investigate factors associated with taking actual action upon a presumption of impairment or incompetence [18].…”

“…The lifetime prevalence of SUD in physicians is, according to American numbers, slightly higher (15.4%) than in the general population (12.6%) [11,12]. In Europe, hazardous alcohol and drug use among physicians are estimated at 18-23% and 3% respectively [13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Compared to the general population, physicians more often use alcohol and prescription medicines, including sedatives and opioids [20,21].…”

“…Ideally, registries are linked on a unique identifier, ensuring a near-perfect link. This method has frequently been used by the Danish hip arthroplasty register where the possibility exists to link medical databases on individual social security numbers [2]. When linkage on a unique identifier is not possible, due to for instance privacy reasons, non-unique identifiers have to be used [3].…”

In France, data regarding French physicians' alcohol behaviors are scarce, but hazardous drinking and consumption of hypnotics seem to increase especially among young physicians (6).…”
