Abstract: J Bone Joint Surg [Br] 1998;80-B:785-90. Received 29 April 1997; Accepted after revision 6 March 1998 In ankle sprains it is rare for the calcaneofibular ligament to be torn independently of the anterior talofibular ligament.

“…Other investigators have explored the use of subtalar arthrography to evaluate the subtalar joint. Both Meyer and colleagues 14 and Sugimoto and colleagues 27 have reported the effectiveness at diagnosing ruptures to ligamentous structures of the subtalar joint. Additionally, MRI has been used to evaluate the ligamentous structures of the subtalar joint.…”

“…Due to the fact that long term instability and altered joint kinematics cause preterm joint arthrosis [5,17,18], full restoration of ligamentous structures is necessary. However our patient failed conservative therapy and refused operative treatment.…”

“…28 That reconstruction of the calcaneofibular ligament can effectively stabilize the subtalar joint in these patients indicates that the lateral ankle ligaments can, at very least, provide a substitute for the loss of interosseous ligament function. 3,7,19,20,24 …”
