Subthreshold φ meson production in heavy-ion collisions

Abstract: Within a transport code of BUU type the production of φ mesons in the reactions Ni + Ni at 1.93 A·GeV and Ru + Ru at 1.69 A·GeV is studied. New elementary reaction channels ρN(∆) → φN and πN(1520) → φN are included. In spite of a substantial increase of the φ multiplicities by these channels the results stay below the tentative numbers extracted from experimental data.

“…There exist a multitude of predictions, partially conflicting in details, awaiting verification or falsification [2][3][4][5][6][7]. Due to negligible final-state interactions with nuclear matter, di-electrons or di-muons are considered to be useful penetrating probes for this purpose.…”

“…Furthermore, q and q pole denote the pion 3-momenta in the rest frame of the Δ(1232) with mass M and M pole , respectively. In [16] the authors investigate the effect of different cutoff prescriptions [44,45], in particular on the dielectron spectra for high masses. The resulting uncertainties are larger than a factor of 3.…”

“…Various prescriptions are used in model calculations (for details, see sect. 3 and [16]) which differ at high resonance masses. As a consequence, the resulting dielectron yield from the resonance Dalitz decays has a large uncertainty, as shown for Δ(1232) in [16].…”

“…N N →N N η describes the process of production of an off-shell η meson in a NN collision, while the amplitude T (2) η→γe + e − describes the Dalitz decay of the produced η meson into a real photon and a di-electron. In the propagator of the η meson the mass m η has been replaced by m η − iΓ η,tot /2 to take into account the finite life time of the η meson.…”
