Successful diagnosis of diaphragmatic solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura by preoperative ultrasonography

Abstract: The diaphragm is an uncommon site for solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTPs). Diaphragmatic SFTPs are usually found as pedunculated tumors with a clear margin with their surrounding structures. However, preoperative diagnosis of the tumor is difficult because their morphological features are not well detected on radiological images. We presented a case of diaphragmatic SFTP that was successfully diagnosed by ultrasonography (US). The US revealed a well-circumscribed mass with the feeding arteries leadin… Show more

“…The majority of patients with diaphragmatic tumors are asymptomatic, although symptoms may arise when the tumor has become large enough to exert a "mass effect" on the adjacent organs [8,10,13]. Clinical manifestations are usually related to the size of the tumor [9].…”

“…Solitary fibrous tumors originating from the diaphragm are very rare. To the best of our knowledge, only five cases of SFTPs arising from the diaphragm have been described in the literature (4)(5)(6)(7)(8). Treatment of giant SFTPs requires complete resection (1).…”
