Successful endovascular embolization of an intralobar pulmonary sequestration

Abstract: Pulmonary sequestration is a congenital malformation characterized by dysplastic pulmonary tissue which receives blood supply by arterial systemic system, not in communication with tracheobronchial tree. Although it could be asymptomatic, it can also cause recurrent infections and hemoptysis, rarely massive and fatal. The conventional treatment consists in surgical resection of the pulmonary sequestration, but in the last few years endovascular embolization has been proposed as a valid therapeutic alternative. … Show more

“…Pulmonary bleeding is often a complication of various respiratory system diseases that are associated with the inflammatory process, which are found in 8-17 % of hospitalized patients [7,8]. Most authors believe that in 95-98 % of observations the source of pulmonary bleeding in patients is bronchial arteries, which depart from the aorta and pleura [9,10].…”

“…It was first discovered by Churton in 1897, and was named multiple pulmonary artery aneurysm; it was later proven by Smith via angiocardiography in 1939. In 1942, Hepburn and Dauphinee performed the first pulmonary arteriovenous fistula surgery . The application of embolization to treat pulmonary arteriovenous fistula was reported for the first time in 1978 .…”
