Successful Implementation of Managed Pressure Drilling Technology Under the Conditions of Catastrophic Mud Losses in the Kuyumbinskoe Field

Abstract: This paper presents a study, illustrating results of effective cooperation between the Operator Company of the Kuyumbinskoye field, Drilling Contractor, and Service Company involved in the construction of the horizontal well using the technology of Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD). This article also describes the challenges encountered and successfully implemented engineering solutions permitting to meet these challenges. The main challenge in the Kuyumbinskoye field is the high risk of mud losse… Show more

“…Calculation of the technological parameters for injecting the polymer composition into the well. Then the technological parameters of polymer composition injection into the well are calculated in the considered algorithm: friction pressure loss, bottomhole pressure for direct and reverse injection methods, effective viscosity for different elements of the well design, as well as total volume of killing liquid and filling time of the well [31,32].…”

“…The density of the frame and gel forming compositions was determined by the pycnometric method according to (GOST 3900-85 2006) and amounted to 1045 kg/m 3 and 1015 kg/m 3 for low temperatures, and for high temperatures -1022 kg/m 3 ), respectively. This value of the density of the studied compositions allows them to be used at normal and reduced values of reservoir pres sure (Galimkhanov et al 2019;Rogachev & Kondrashev 2016).…”

“…In such complicated conditions, the main task is to control the fluid loss during well killing operations. In world practice, two basic physical principles are used to reduce fluid loss during well service: increasing the blocking fluids viscosity and Blocking of pores (fractures) and channels of filtration by solid particles (Dandekar, 2013;Rogachev and Kondrashev, 2016;Petrov et al, 2008;Ryabokon, 2009;Galimkhanov, 2019;Volkov, 2019). These principles are implemented in blocking compositions, which are aqueous solutions, emulsions, crosslinked polymer gels, and dispersed systems with solid or gas phases (Figure 1) (Islamov et al, 2019).…”
