Successful Initiation of Hybrid Closed-Loop System Using Virtual Pump Training Program in a Teenager With Type 1 Diabetes Previously Treated with Multiple Daily Injections

Abstract: Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 restrictions in providing diabetes services, we have developed an innovative pump training program, which consisted of technical session, pump training, one in-person practical session, and four consecutive online sessions (Skype Meet Now). A 13-year-old female patient with a 4-year history of type 1 diabetes (T1D) on multiple daily injections (MDI) with glycated hemoglobin 8.9%; 74 mmol/mol) initiated Minimed 670G system using the program. Time in range (70-180 mg/dL) of 3… Show more

“…As a relevant finding, despite the fact that the population had a relatively low basal glycemic variability, a significant decrease in %CV was achieved, associated with the significant reduction in TBR in this study. Similar to previous reported cases using this modality, in this study there were no SH or hyperglycemia [ 12 ].…”

“…Our study showed virtual pump training for novel devices can be successfully used in people with T1D on MDI, which confirms similar findings that remote communication technology may be an effective tool to provide training to children, adolescents, and adults with T1D. 2 , 3 , 4 …”

“…The use of telehealth in diabetes management has substantially increased during the COVID‐19 pandemic, and several studies on remote initiation of insulin pumps in people with T1D 2 , 3 , 4 have shown that training and education for specific insulin pump, such as hybrid closed‐loop (HCL) systems, can be virtually initiated using specific protocols.…”

“…The COVID‐19 pandemic and mandatory social distancing has brought challenges to anatomy educators and other teachers who generally need in‐person classes. After numerous efforts by educators, online classes using live communication tools, for example, Zoom (He, Shelden, Kraftson, Else, & Auchus, 2020; Rucker, Steele, Zumwalt, & Bray, 2020), Skype (Petrovski, Campbell, Almajali, Al Khalaf, & Hussain, 2020), and Microsoft Teams (Henderson et al, 2020; Higgins, Murphy, & Hogg, 2020), have proved useful alternative methods for education. One of the advantages of live communication tools over in‐person classes is that they enable lecturers to provide presentations even if the participants are located in different cities, states, or even countries (Iwanaga, Tanaka, Ohyama, & Tubbs, 2020).…”
