Successful Integration of an Academic Electronic Health Record Into the Curriculum of an Associate Degree Nursing Program

Abstract: The use of electronic data management systems is rapidly expanding. Nurses need to be competent in the use of electronic health records (EHRs) and understand their contribution to safe, effective, high quality patient care. Faculty must incorporate learning experiences in the application of EHRs into undergraduate nursing programs in order to adequately prepare students for employment. This article reports the challenges involved in the successful addition of an academic EHR into an existing curriculum.

“…The integration of simulated EHRs also enhances students' confidence and self-efficacy in using electronic records [23,[44][45][46] and increases informatics knowledge and competency [16,40,47]. Despite these benefits, factors such as cost and faculty expertise continue to be major challenges in integrating simulated EHRs in nursing education [18,34,48,49].…”

“…The integration of EMR into the curriculum, both theory and simulation learning, would better prepare them for the real world of clinical practice. EMR systems and educational programs have been successfully integrated into undergraduate nursing curriculum in other countries such as USA, 19,21,41 Canada, 10 South Korea, 7,18 and Singapore, 24 however it is unclear why there has been a delayed interval in Australian universities. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) accreditation standards makes specific mention of prioritising the development and application of knowledge and skills in health informatics and health technology in the undergraduate nursing program content.…”

“…The current literature shows that students are confident with their electronic nursing documentation after students explore AEHRs, [5,18] although several challenges/barriers were addressed in the current literature such as a lack of training, inadequate technical support, and cost. [5,7,9,19] One of the barriers, some faculty felt that learning electronic documentation was not a priority.…”

“…[3,4] As part of informatics, an academic electronic health record system (AEHRs) is adopted to provide students' learning opportunities through patient assessment and decision making. [5][6][7][8] Specifically, AEHRs can help students how to utilize standard nursing terminology, how to incorporate clinical documentation from various sources, how to support standard care plans, guidelines, and protocols, and how to support drug interaction checking, and linking clinical tasks. [7,9,10] However, nurse educators have been faced with several challenges to meet the expectation of graduate nurses' competency to use AEHRs for synthesizing knowledge in patient care.…”
