Successful treatment of a stage IIIC small-cell carcinoma of the ovary hypercalcemic subtype using multi-modality therapeutic approach

Abstract: Small-cell carcinoma of the ovary, hypercalcemic type (SCCOHT) is a rare but highly undifferentiated, aggressive malignancy that primarily affects young women. Due to its early onset, unclear familial history and vague presenting symptoms, most SCCOHT patients present late with advanced disease. The prognosis is extremely poor, with <10% disease-free survival for advanced stages. Although several therapeutic regimens have been proposed, to date there is no consensus on the optimal strategy. Here, we describe a … Show more

“…In OSCCTH, tumors are generally large in size, with an average diameter of 15 to 16 cm, and a nodular or lobulated appearance with mostly solid or partially cystic sections accompanied by visible hemorrhage and necrosis. [ 1 , 5 ] Histologically, the growth pattern of OSCCTH is solid and trabecular, with typical follicle-like spaces and a sheet-like arrangement of small monomorphic cells, with scanty cytoplasm and round, ovoid, small nuclei containing single, small nucleoli. [ 7 , 10 ] Mitotic figures and necrosis are frequent.…”

“…Two-thirds of cases are associated with hypercalcemia, but only 10% of patients have symptoms of hypercalcemia. [ 4 , 5 ] Due to its unclear familial history and vague symptoms, most patients with OSCCHT present late with advanced disease. [ 1 , 5 ] There is little knowledge regarding patients diagnosed with OSCCHT during pregnancy, and only a limited number of case reports can be found in the literature.…”

“…In contrast, OCCC targets women aged 55 years or older and is characterized by mutations in phosphatidylinositol-4, 5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit α (PIK3CA) [19,20], and phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN), in addition to the ARID1A mutations. Both SCCOHT and OCCC respond poorly to conventional chemotherapy, and to date, there is no consensus on an optimal therapeutic strategy [5,[20][21][22][23].…”
