Successful use of single‐pass albumin dialysis in the correction of severe hyperbilirubinemia in a case of acute hepatitis E

Abstract: Introduction Acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare syndrome defined by the rapid loss of liver function in the absence of pre‐existing liver disease, which may be secondary to hepatitis A virus, hepatitis E virus (HEV), or to drugs in about 50% of cases. Extracorporeal albumin dialysis enables the elimination of albumin‐bound toxins that accumulate in liver failure. Methods We report a case of ALF secondary to HEV associated with severe hyperbilirubinemia. Patient was treated with four consecutive sessions of si… Show more

“…It may be related to various mediators including bile acids, endogenous opioid peptide, histamine and lysophosphatidic acid. Pruritogens cause itching through the activation of the G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and the transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels on the afferent nerve endings in the skin (11).…”

“…It is an inexpensive, widely available, simple technique that requires only a simple CRRT machine and exogenous albumin. Although an HCO filter has been reported to be used[ 68 ]; in most cases, a high-flux hemofilter is used as a dialyzer. The albumin-containing dialysate flows opposite to the blood in the filter, extracting the hydrophobic substances from the saturated albumin of the blood to the dialysate, which is subsequently disposed.…”
