“…However, he also found that young stems on which ACM had fed shrivelled up and died, indicating the translocation of salivary enzymes along the stolon. The present study detected no differences in stolon length associated with PM feeding, and elsewhere PM feeding damage has been shown to be localised to a small area of plant tissue associated with the stylet lesion (Uyemoto et al 1986;Michailides et al 1987;Schroeder & Clifford 1996). Generally, the younger the buds are when they are attacked, the greater will be the effect on seed yield, and the higher the number of undamaged inflorescences per unit area the higher the total seed yield (Fig.…”

“…Outbreaks of epicarp lesion symptoms in pistachio fruit in California were found to result from feeding puncture wounds by several bugs, including PM (Uyemotoetal. 1986;Michailides et al 1987). The injury caused from injected feeding enzymes was apparently localised to the feeding site.…”

“…In California, C. hilaris is one of a group of hemipteran species that cause direct crop damage to pistachio (Bolkan et al 1984, Rice et al 1985, an exotic crop that has increased greatly in crop acreage and value since the 1980s (Anonymous 2010). When hemipteran damage to pistachio nuts was Þrst reported, species were often simply grouped as small bugs (Miridae and Rhopalidae) and big bugs (Pentatomidae and Coreidae) (Rice et al 1985, Michailides et al 1987, based not only on their physical size but on their seasonal occurrence and type of crop damage. Although small bugs are often abundant and can cause damage early in the season (Purcell and Welter 1990), they pose little threat after shell hardening (Purcell and Welter 1991).…”

“…Although small bugs are often abundant and can cause damage early in the season (Purcell and Welter 1990), they pose little threat after shell hardening (Purcell and Welter 1991). Large bugs, including C. hilaris, have relatively larger and stronger mouthparts and, for this reason, can continue to penetrate the shell and damage kernels later into the season as shell hardening increases (Michailides et al 1987, Daane et al 2005.…”

“…This damage is due to the induction of epicarp lesions on young fruits, which may lead to fruit desiccation and fruit abortion. In addition to this species, Michailides et al (1987) showed that different mirid species that also cause epicarp lesions may infest the trees by sequential invasions during the season.…”
