a b s t r a c tWrack supplies (macroalgae, seagrasses and carrion) are a common feature of sandy beaches worldwide. These allochthonous inputs are a potential high-quality food subsidy for beach fauna, but little is known about the feeding ecology and niche segregation strategies of these species in beaches with limited wrack availabilities. We used stable isotopic ratios of nitrogen and carbon to examine the diets and niche segregation among three sympatric crustaceans, the amphipods Talitrus saltator and Talorchestia brito, and the isopod Tylos europaeus, in two temperate beaches, Cabedelo and Quiaios, on the Portuguese Atlantic coast, with contrasting wrack availabilities, over winter and summer. In the beach with limited wrack (Quiaios), consumers showed significantly different interspecific and temporal isotopic signatures, suggesting a distinct foraging habitat and niche differentiation. Mixing models outputs (SIAR) revealed in this case a seasonal shift in the diet of consumers from terrestrial sources in winter towards marinebased sources (phytoplankton) in the summer. In contrast, at Cabedelo, consumers showed clear overlap in isotopic signatures, with similar contributions of the available wrack to their diets. As a whole, an opportunistic and generalist feeding behaviour was described for these species, namely for T. saltator. Isotopic profiles support the occurrence of spatial overlap during summer but different foraging strategies of the three species in these beaches during winter. Our results show that on temperate beaches with ephemeral wrack supplies, consumers might need to adopt different foraging strategies and niche segregation for their subsistence, and additionally illustrate the viability of using stable isotopes to capture subtle changes in trophic niches.

Samples of the kelp Durvillaea antarctica were placed in mesh bags on the upper shore of a southern New Zealand exposed sandy beach and monitored over 30 days to examine their decomposition and macrofaunal colonisation. Amphipoda, Staphylinidae, other Coleoptera and Diptera made up 99.9% of total macrofaunal abundance and biomass of the colonising fauna. Amphipoda and Staphylinidae abundance differed significantly between days of exposure. All main taxonomic groups, except other Coleoptera, differed in biomass between days of exposure and between seasons, with greater biomass in autumn than winter. Decomposition rate and moisture content of D. antarctica differed significantly between days of exposure and between seasons, whereas carbon content only differed significantly over time. Correlations between macrofaunal abundance and the decomposition rate, and total macrofaunal abundance and the C:N ratio, suggest that the macrofaunal community prefers older wrack, despite it being lower in nitrogen content then fresh kelp.

The upper portions of sandy beaches usually have a strip of debris deposited by the action of waves and tides known as "drift line" or "stranded wrack". This deposit is inhabited by amphipods Talitridae and insects, particularly beetles of the family Staphylinidae. For their sensitive to environmental variations, these beetles can be considered important bio-indicators of sandy beach ecosystem health. In the southern coast of Brazil three species of the genus Bledius Leach, 1819 were reported: Bledius bonariensis, B. fernandezi and B. hermani. The present work analyses the relationship between sandy beach sedimentological and morphodynamic characteristics and the occurrence pattern of Bledius species from data obtained on a preliminary survey on 12 sandy beaches of Paraná state. B. hermani was the most abundant and frequent species, present in ten of the 12 beaches studied. B. fernandezi showed a positive correlation with morphodynamics and sedimentological characteristics. Furthermore, B. hermani was dominant on beaches with coarse sand and more reflective to intermediate morphodynamic. B. bonariensis showed higher densities at beaches with dissipative characteristics near the mouth of Paranaguá Bay. The highest densities of Bledius were recorded on inhabited Superagüi beaches, located in a national park. This suggests that the group could be affected by human interference, particularly urbanization.
